The Da Vinci Media quiz tool was created as part of a new educational “Quests” feature created for the Da Vinci mobile app around the start of 2023, and then later added to the Da Vinci website. Users would be able to select a quest through a map of educational challenges, watch a short educational snippet based on the selected challenge, and then answer a quiz to be rewarded with a completion badge.

The quiz portion of the project was developed by myself and requested to be a standalone, modular application that could be slotted in to any of Macademia’s current or future projects, as well as potentially sold or lent out as an individual tool should the want arise. Initially I developed the project in Phaser as a canvas-based HTML5 game, but rewrote the project in React as a standalone Single Page Application during a visual redesign when Phaser had issues with crisp text and UI for all platforms. Data for the quizzes was sent in simple JSON files parsed from an excel spreadsheet that the content team would fill out with questions, answers, and image links to create the quizzes, and work was done with the mobile app developers to figure out ways of being able to communicate quiz results to Cocos2d, the platform the mobile app was built on. Quests functionality was added to the Da Vinci web site in late 2023 with implementation handled by myself, requiring slight edits to allow for a different form of data communication as the quiz was redesigned to embed as an iframe object.
